Time For a Reality Check

It’s way too easy to spiral into nihilism when we see who keeps getting ahead. But the best way to fight back? Take up space. Apply for the role. Speak up in meetings. Make them see you, hear you, and pay you what you’re worth. Because no one is going to prioritize you—except you.💋

I started doing this and you’d be surprised how much of a job can be learnt on a job. But l did get lucky in the sense that I had a team who valued motivation to learn over simply jumping into it and being inflexible

This. We recently hired a senior level manager in my department and I was part of the hiring board. The person we chose was very good in many respects but lacking in one which was forecasting a budget. When asked about their experience in this area they said “Well, I manage my household budget.” We still hired them, and they’re doing just fine and we have people that can help them.

“Any idiot can do it” is great inspiration.

Or, and hear me out, we could instead work to make employment in this country better rather than capitulating to it.

    • @Window4503 says:

Employed people should do that then since they’re less likely to be in urgent need of income. Rent, bills, and the digestive system don’t care about ideals and won’t wait for change.

    • @Tahoza says:

@@Window4503 I’m not entirely sure if you’re agreeing with me or chastising me.

    • @kaichen04 says:

How will unemployed people do that?

    • @Tahoza says:

@ I’m unemployed myself. Here I am trying to contribute to the conversation, hoping to help make the idea grow.

I am by no means suggesting that the employed and the employers shouldn’t be working for the same thing; my comment was left to an employed person after all.

I get that the general tone of the video, put out by an employed person (or a team, doesn’t matter) no less, was meant to be encouraging and supportive, but it is also putting the onus on the job-seeker to make things better for themselves here.

Like, I genuinely don’t know what the issue is here regarding what I said unless maybe this is just a gut reaction or something people are having to anyone mentioning anything critical at all in the comments of a channel like this one. Is that what’s going on here?

    • @Arissiah says:

@@Tahoza they’re really not doing either. They’re making a statement implying that food and bills are necessary expenses, so people job hunting aren’t really in a position to not go along with the job market. Whereas people already gainfully employed would be in a better position to try to make a change, an example, people in HR that handle hiring could have an impact

  • @carole5648 says:

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m getting the “we had more applications than expected” rejection even on jobs I’m over qualified for lately. At this point I really feel like my time spent applying is just a waste of my time and emotional bandwidth

  • @ariwl1 says:

My rule of thumb is if I can make a solid case that I have 60-70% of the job must-haves then I go for it. Every job applicant will have weaknesses. If you work to make the best application you can someone will eventually see you.

  • @lindilindi says:

I’ve done that… Applied at a lower rating, and HR would not let me change it. Lower pay than I deserved for a year. Government HR sucks sometimes.

  • @loomonda18 says:

    I can’t even get an interview😢

  • @chrispatterson9689 says:

Oh, and their channel is called The Financial Diet? Giving financial advice while acting like national debt doesn’t matter? That’s rich. Maybe they should take their own advice before preaching to everyone else.

  • @user-um8zt2ke8o says:

Apply to all the jobs. Theres no humans that look over anything anymore until last minute. Its all AI. Worse thatll happen is literally nothing. They just wont hire you and move on to the next resume. Theres no reason to not apply now. All computers. Youll either get the job or not and thats with or without qualifications, so may as well. My last boss got to where she was by sleeping with her boss so really none of it matters bc someone who’s less qualified than you will still become your boss. Oh and if you find a better job, TAKE IT. Try to maintain outside health insurance so youre not tied to benefits.
