    I didn’t know it was a generational thing, but I decline to take a managerial path of advancement because I honestly find it morally compromising. Being a manager at a big corporation means enforcing policies and directives that come from higher up, and if I disagree with those policies in some way, I basically have to either go against my own values and enforce them anyway or be actively insubordinate and risk my job. At least in my current role, I only have to make compromises for myself. As much as that sucks, I’m bearing the pain and not causing it to others.

      There is a third option though not easy. Find a company whose values match yours otherwise it’s soul sucking whether you are a manager or not. Good luck! ❤

    I feel like you can be grateful but can also recognize when a job is too toxic and that outweighs any pros. I know leaving a job in this market is tough, but if you have the long-term resources to do so and can, you can also be grateful for that and prioritize you which is a privilege a lot of people don’t have.

    Maybe some commenters can give me their perspective on my situation. I’ve been at my college job for now my sixth year and I’ve more than tripled my starting wage of 13 to now 37 an hour. It’s a modest wage and the job is flexible if need be. After Covid I became one of the longest staying employees as they laid everyone else off. I occasionally get fed up with the work load but tend to manage it all within a reg work week. I’ve thought about leaving but no job similar to mine pays what they pay me. Yet I feel like I should be paid more. I’ve thought of going back to school and becoming a math teacher (I have a ba in math) but I need some additional schooling. Now with the way government is acting I’m iffy on that. I don’t have a dream job but want balance and to have a content life as I don’t desire to be on the grind and keep increasing my pay. I feel content yet I feel there’s a push to change industries and I think that’s just a societal pressure

      If you work at a college then you should definitely consider talking to your boss and seeing if they are willing to pay for additional schooling (or look into other schools in your state and if they will help you do that).

    Hey, just a heads up. My partner got a graduate degree in social work as well as undergrad because she wanted to pursue private practice mental health care. It’s quicker than going the counseling route (that’s 6 years and she did it in 5), and you get a more generalist degree that allows you to go full independent license and make GOOD money after your clinical supervision hours are complete. Or you can choose public policy if you prefer. Social work is actually a growing field because of its expansion past the public sector. She also only has about $15k total in student loans because of scholarships and grants given by the state to study what she did. We know LCSW’s who make over 100k annually (even one person who makes nearly 200k remotely). If you do it right, social work is very lucrative now and beats a counseling degree in ROI. It’s one of those secrets that iykyk.

    In January I left the best job I’ve ever had to follow my dreams of having my own business. Like almost all places I’ve worked at, I got along great with my coworkers it just came down with the boss not valuing me and paying me what I was worth. Two weeks ago I found my first real big client, and she LOVES all the stuff I bring to the table, and I am getting paid more than I was as an employee and can be fully remote. Honestly before I found her I was overthinking if I had done the right thing with all the fear talks about a recession.

    Social capital is something that is functionally devoid from existence when it comes to the tech world since staying for more than 3 years in any 1 role is met with equally mixed extremes between “What are you thinking? You’re never going to get paid what you’re worth that way!” and “We see that you’ve moved around a lot between your various roles, can you explain that please?” further proving that nobody is happy with any answer that’s given and it’s 100% a psy-op on that hiring manager’s part as they figure out if they’re going to be able to extort above and beyond levels of work for minimal effort on their part (the employer) out of that person, as I’ve *never* worked for an employer that didn’t make it abundantly clear that we (my peers and I) are completely interchangeable cogs in a machine.

    This is either the best or worst time for me to listen to this episode… i graduate in a month and i find out this Tuesday if I’ll get a full time job offer from my current internship. I love this internship and the local job market in my field is otherwise extremely dry, so it really feels like this or nothing 😭😭😭

    Most HR pros recommend AGAINST using counter offers, even if they give you more money they are planning on how to replace you.

    It all comes down to your relationship with your manager, if they are jerks than you’re going to be miserable !

    10:03 I told my buddy he was being taken advantage of at work and gave that exact advice. Went to them with an offer and instantly got a 40% pay raise + one more week of PTO a year.
