Really been loving this video format. It feels real and like a friend is sitting down to give me the DL of what’s happening and what you’re thinking, and I’m glad that you’re not trying to pretend that you know everything but also just sharing the things that are open questions for you/making you anxious. It helps a lot and feels validating.

Thanks for sharing this. As a Canadian in a steel town (Hamilton), it’s stressful. On top of impacting steel mills and related industries, it’s a scary time for our beautiful small businesses. If people are losing work, they won’t be able to support bakeries, boutiques, restaurants, and the like. It’s so sad to see that, just when we seemed to be getting out from the worst of inflation and COVID, Trump goes on a tear. It sucks. I’m sorry you Americans are having to deal with it first-hand.

    • @KevinLyda says:

We Americans did this to ourselves. So don’t feel too sorry for quite a few of us.

But I live in Ireland now so please do a trade deal with the EU and send us steel and help us ward off the other nitwit.

    • @killedwithkarate says:

@@KevinLyda I would love some EU trade deals! The rest of the world is going to have to work with and care for each other right now.

Ayeee I’m moving to Hamilton soon! ❤

    • @ryoknits says:

Here’s a corny idea: sell tiny commemorative steel bars that say “Oh Canada” or have a maple leaf, as a way to bring money in. People can buy them to show support for Canada’s sovereignty.

    • @fdm2155 says:

Yes, I have the same concerns. I live in a big city in the US. My area is a mix of incomes. There are lots of small businesses. Lots of seniors on fixed incomes. So I think many in this are will struggle if Trump’s chaos puts us into a prolonged recession. The community really came together to support small shops during COVID. So there’s definitely hope that our local businesses won’t be wiped out.

    • @Canadish says:

I think they viewed Trump as a known element.
Sanders was (incorrectly) seen as radical.
I’ll be curious if they begin to see the wrong horse was backed and flip. Not hat being smug helps. Saying “I told you so” on the way to the camps doesn’t do anyone much good.

    • @deborahcurtis1385 says:

Subversive! Your bar is very low for that. I agree most financial people will gaslight you but the most subversive thing you can do is to educate yourself about MAGA and Trump in great detail so you can try to predict what’s next before it actually happens. There has been a move toward cash and gold, and blockchain currencies. I’m not a fan of the last one but the first two make sense for at least some of your portfolio. The rest should be in defensive stocks. Read up about what they are and why the unpredictability of this regime (it’s hardly an administration) undermines even that. I hold biotechs and even though they should be secure, I’m not sure what RFK Jnr is going to decide one minute to the next. Educate yourself and wean yourself off the financial advisors and also be wary of conspiracy theorists. It’s a lot of work. A LOT but only that way will you be able to see a clear pathway.

It’s nice to see videos like this. I’m about to be unemployed, and my job search has not gone well. This kind of video is way more reassuring than someone saying “good luck in all your future endeavors.” Thankfully I have a decent emergency fund, and I live with my gf, but idk how to navigate these scary times.

    • @fdm2155 says:

I had to job hunt during the 2008/2009 recession. It was BRUTAL so I definitely feel your pain. I did finally find something AND guess what…? I still work there! So in a weird way, it’s had a positive outcome. I’d never have found this employer but for being willing to take any short term contract gig back then. Glad to hear you’re in an okay is not amazing place. And of course, these are times that make us throw money into emergency funds.

    • @sunny3907 says:

      Uuuummmm.
      You don’t have a gf.

    • @youtubeuser1052 says:

Yes you do, you just typed it into a YouTube comment. You have and emergency fund and live with your gf. That’s how you navigate these not really very scary times. Trump is absolutely a corrupt and destructive president and Musk is mentally unstable, but the US has become way too much of a service economy and become way to dependent on other countries to make too much of the products we depend on, some of them built using slave labor. We’ve become too dependent on the extremely cheap output of dirt poor foreigners. It’s not sustainable for the majority of the US population to provide services to each other and get most of our actual “stuff” people in other countries living and working in relative poverty.

    • @wen6519 says:

I wish the best for you, I hope you find a job soon. Best of luck.

    • @cal5384 says:

Good luck, Iv been jobless for over three months and applied for well over 100 jobs. Iv had several long rounds of interviews only to be told positions are being closed. Hopefully you have a good savings account

23:45 YES. I think many Americans are waking up to the fact that history did not end, and that the progress that our ancestors bled and died for must be vigilantly maintained and improved.

  • @Matllo09 says:

Canadian here…we are big mad right now. The constant on and off of the tarrifs are a pain, but the constant threat to our soverignty is really pissing me off. We will never be the “51st state” we have our own history and way of life.

    • @Jay-ho9io says:

No one of any significant rank in the US military thinks you’re going to anything other than a sovereign country, either.

I’ve served beside your countries military for nearly 20 years. While I don’t think an actual attempt is at all likely (though I am concerned for both Panama and to a lesser extent Mexico) Even if an attempt was made, it would not be successful.

It’s obscene that the conversation is being had at all, but despite how badly they are generally treated in Canada and by Canadians, your military is more than capable of defending your borders and your sovereignity.

    • @musicismybloodtype says:

my blood literally boils whenever I think about it

    • @LunaLinguine says:

Well, the French and British colonized what is now called Canada so, unless I am responding to someone who is indigenous to that land, your ancestors did a lot worse. I’m not saying I agree with what Trump is threatening to do, but Canada exists because of a genocide, so might be nice to acknowledge that when protesting for “our own history and way of life”.

    • @fdm2155 says:

Right? Where did that bullshit even come from? Like, the Republicans don’t want Puerto Rico OR Washington, DC to be states but CANADA? This is what happens when you elect a narcissistic moron.

    • @AThirstyPhilosopher says:

    • @lovelyamerah says:

@DreamAboutM823 I feel you on that. I actually got fired ,just as the 2008 recession hit. Even factory labor temp jobs weren’t hiring!!! Luckily ,I had a chance to go to job corp. So I had a place to stay ,eat learn a job skill etc. Had to put all my stuff in storage. I’m doing all I can to save and keep things stocked in the house. Working as much as I can ,while I can. Last weekend I found out my younger brother voted for Trump. He claims it was to protect his earnings now that he makes 6-figures… But he doesn’t realize he makes 6-figures because he’s unionized! And he failed to realize his industry (airline industry) is one of the first industries to take a hit during a recession. People won’t have the disposable funds to travel anymore in a recession!🤦‍♀🤦‍♀ I’m so damn disappointed, and I’m sad that our political differences will wedge a gap in our relationship😢

    • @royceroyce7715 says:

Grl if he kept it from you until now, there’s probably already a bit of a wedge 😬 He had to know you’d have feelings about someone being … exactly as selfishly, narrowly focused on his own gains, even at others expense and livelihoods, as the conman in chief.

    • @lisamassey8541 says:

And heaven forbid the union has to negotiate. The NLRB is going to do Jack for him.

    • @NewVanquished says:

My brother and I have been political opposites since 2015. He thinks he’s what I like to call “sports team conservative” and just started make six figures as well. He and I were talking like a month ago and I honestly just started to feel sorry for him. He did work really hard to earn an MBA and now he’s working 2 well paying jobs and running himself ragged trying to make himself Uber successfull but in reality he’s at the lower end of middle class. Then he mentioned how things will get better once Trump gets rid of income tax. I had to stop myself from busting out laughing at him. The delusion that his way of life won’t be ruined is honestly heart-beeaking.

    • @lovelyamerah says:

@@NewVanquished Trump never actually said he would end income taxes ,but rather *hinted * at the possibility of it. So for your brother to assume that was gonna happen ,was his own error. Recession ( if it’s not already here)is on the horizon and will happen no matter who was in the oval office. It’s not like Kamala’s plans were THAT much better than Trump’s. There were things already set in morion, which is why I love my finance guy for giving me the heads up.

    • @lovelyamerah says:

@@royceroyce7715Yea, to think that who his bro voted for was the ” last straw”😂 Honestly if I were to lose someone based on who I or they voted for, they probably weren’t real friends/family anyways. Sometimes the trash takes it’s self out

  • @Towhee says:

The idea that recessions happen regularly and are kinda NECESSARY for the market to continue and grow makes me think, perhaps, this is not the best financial system to have….

  • @anfgirlkaty says:

The one thing I’m doing right now, and I feel like is happening across many communities I engage, is being super thoughtful about WHERE I spend the money I am still spending. I’m choosing the lessor of the large corporations. Example: I’m removing as much as possible my pet subscription orders from Amazon and shifting them to Chewy. I’m choosing to shop at Costco rather than Target/Whole Foods. Can I go to a Farmers Market and skip the grocery store entirely? I know that my choices aren’t perfect, but the more I can impact the bottom line of big business, I am going to do it. This is my small act of defiance on the day to day. Buying less crap in general, and buying it elsewhere when I must. These corporations listen to one thing and one thing only… money.

    • @the_julia_fair says:

Love it and am doing the same! Will say that Chewy is still a large corp, if you can getting pet supplies from a local pet shop is a good option!

    • @mightymyax5108 says:

Same here. I’ve tried to order as little from Amazon as possible. I’m going to get a Costco membership next week and I am trying to spend as little at Walmart as well.

    • @aturtlethatisred says:

Woohoo! It’s all about harm reduction. Perfection is not the goal❤ You are doing great!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎉

    • @anfgirlkaty says:

@@the_julia_fairtotally agree, and doing a bit of both. Going with local when I can, and then bigger (but still considering their policies) when I can’t. I’ve found that Chewy is really really good with personalized customer service, and have continued with their DEI initiatives so I want to reward those bigger companies like Costco and Chewy with my business.

    • @kimberlybega8271 says:

We ended up gradually switching our stuff to Chewy, too, and the final straw was Amazon delaying and then only partially fulfilling one of our auto ship orders and me having to make an emergency run to the grocery store or pet store. Chewy seems to be more dependable.

  • @frankthemousepie says:

I am worried about the long term, how will other countries trust us again? They won’t. They shouldn’t. Once is a fluke, twice is a choice. US is showing it’s declining state and power on its sleeve now and I just can’t comprehend why so many people wanted to make the rich even richer at great personal expense. A third of voters being ok with fascism is troubling to say the least… It feels hopeless

    • @susanjeffries5108 says:

      Completely agree. It’s scary.

    • @ObsidianxAlice says:

If we as a country start working toward better choices, they will again. But, just like the video emphasizes, we have to DO SOMETHING. Small things, big things, whatever – something besides lay down and just let it happen. Change starts small, no change happens when we stop trying.

    • @hoppareiter says:

From a German perspective, I can tell you that it took the world about 60 years to build trust again and not primarily associate us with Nazism. When I was young in the 90s, that was still very much the tenor.

I’m afraid Canada is done, tariffs or not, Trump or not.

    • @Canadish says:

It’s a shame, given we have no issue with over 50% of Americans. Even the ones voting Trump are broadly victims of a sabotaged education system and abandonment by financial powers.

This is a at the core, a gaggle of oligarchs who have just realised they can swing for the fences, intentionally crash the economy and buy up the small remaining wealth in the fallout. And the world is going to suffer to make about 10 people’s networth quadruple.
