Quality over quantity.
Having grown up poor, and now being in a good financial situation, my husband has taught me little by little that there are some things we dont want to go cheap and “save” because we want quality over quantity.

My income went up, but I have not succumbed to lifestyle inflation. I continue to buy at consignment and thrift stores. I live in a high end neighborhood. I get a lot of nice stuff without a large piece tag. Knowing what it’s like to be poor, the money I save I invest, which is 19% of my income.
She has never hidden the fact that she makes great money and spends it, thats kind of the whole account. She tells us honestly about the ins and outs of her financial history and situation. Shes very honest when it comes to her money so whats the point in that criticism?
As someone who grew up in poverty – there is a tendency I’ve seen where some want to cut down people who have escaped any level of poverty. Let’s be happy for people who aren’t just surviving.
Frustrates me that so many people boast about how cheap something is thinking they’ll impress me. Buy something ethically, now that’s impressive.

As many people mentioned in the comments, quality or quantity was the best lesson I learned. With that said, there’s a big difference between quality and brands, which is another lesson I learned. I only pay for quality, not brands.
You can get cast iron 2nd or 3rd hand cast iron skillet that will last you forever. All I own now is cast iron and stainless steel cookware.

There’s a saying in Germany “If you buy cheap, you pay twice” and that’s such an important thing to realize.
Quality will last you a lifetime, and sometimes longer.
I’m still wearing some of my mom’s shoes from the Soviet Union, my cutlery is from my grandmother, my satchel is from a friend who got it from their grandfather….
Learn to spot quality, and your life will be much more cost-effective.

I appreciate you saying this. I also prefer quality and I agree to pay more for it (mostly on sales too), because I ALWAYS think of wear-time of everything. My mom looked at me like I was insane when I bought a purse for 350$ that’s lasted me 5 years and going strong, while she needs to change her 30$ bags every year…
Do people not understand that you can buy expensive things when you can afford them? The problem is people buying expensive things they can’t afford.
While I’m not super financially stable rn, this is something that I’ve been slowly trying to realearn for myself. I was definitely raised on a cheaper is always better mindset
