Baby Bonus… or a Trap?

When policies offer you $5,000 to have a child but no paid leave, no affordable childcare, no healthcare, no housing protections, and no safety net—what they’re really offering is a trap.

    All truth.

  • @pixie3013 says:

Yes! We have to start looking at what is behind these policies, no matter what one’s political leanings. Misogyny and patriarchal tendencies are real. Imagine the nonsense women could shutdown, if we all got on the same page with this issue.

5k would not even pay the birthing bill

    • @selencia7312 says:

Just had a kid recently, even in-network for a regular delivery ( not cesarean) and no complications with 2 days admitted under BCBS it cost me $8,156 out of pocket. ( This value might still go up as I’m still waiting on a couple of in-hospital physician bills. ) So yeah… 5 grand is nice but would literally be “spent” before the child could be brought home for the first time.

Also daycare for infants in my area costs anywhere from $1250-$1800 a month, but the kicker? Those programs have a waitlist of 5 to 18 months. Good luck if you did not make a $2k down payment for a daycare in your first trimester because businesses don’t have to compensate you for that 12 week FMLA you apply for and too bad so sad if you need more time off work to secure a viable childcare solution for your family.

      Not even the deductible

I know the NHS has its problems but no-one has to pay to give birth in the UK. And we get maternity and paternity leave and STILL living costs are too high and the birth rate continues to dive

  • @nokswift says:

One time payment of 5000…… that’s such a joke

  • @lilliandadon9048 says:

Okay but if I’m already pregnant how do I claim that 5k ..

  • @nw1317 says:

Right?! 5k to pop out entire human beings who cost more than a house for their early lifetime is not remotely a motivation

  • @nerdlingeeksly5192 says:

Or he could subsidize the construction of more affordable housing.
Or offer to help pay for the monthly mortgages.

  • @choi1061984 says:

When the USA can give me 1 year of maturnity leave, have a daycare at my job and then have a good public school my kid can walk to without feeling the fear of getting possibly shot in class at maybe we can start talking.

This is such an important message. Women, know your power.

  • @eklectiktoni says:

Would they give it to women adopting too? Or is it only for people who birth children? Because society’s tendency to devalue people who adopt is a just another layer to this whole having children discussion.

    • @lemonstar1261 says:

The expenses a family incurs by adopting are insane! It’s easier to adopt a child from a foreign country than it is to adopt a child who is a US citizen. 😢

    • @julesbilee says:

(also obligatory how many of these payments that are supposed to go to people of color magically never make it to them or get stuck in bureaucratic limbo or mysteriously not be the full amount)

  • @julesbilee says:

said this in a reply but they’ve also tried this in other countries like Japan and Korea (which also famously have their own misogyny problems) and it’s not working either. Yet they will do anything but treat women better (and by treat I also include policies, social programs, etc not just general attitudes and vibes).

    • @julesbilee says:

also these countries similarly to the US have problems with xenophobia/racism and it really should be emphasized that it’s specifically about having more Korean/Japanese/White American babies. These countries are also very capitalistic so it’s a conflict of wanting more workers but they need to be the “right” kind of workers

  • @thorn.charmer says:

He was gonna pay us taxpayers $5k for all the DOGE savings too. I paid $36 in federal taxes this year. I expect my $5k.

  • @Caelgut says:

That’s crazy. In Poland, they do $200 per month per child on top of social programs. And given the cost of living here, that $200 goes decently far.

  • @michellejarvis7878 says:

The US is the only developed country which does not have nationally mandated maternity leave. One in four women in the US has to return to work two weeks after giving birth.

    • @lemonstar1261 says:

I was fortunate enough to have a three month maternity leave, but i actually had to LEAVE MY CAREER FIELD and get a crappy finance job to achieve this because I am older and was worried I wouldn’t be able to return to work without resting. No one should have to work right after giving birth – it’s bad for the mother and definitely not ideal for the child.

Does $5k even cover the hospital bill?

  • @hannahpemarose6474 says:

GROSS 🤮if I wasn’t childfree by choice before, I sure as hell am now! 🤦‍♀️

  • @afreaknamedallie1707 says:

Literally 5k won’t even cover the cost of giving uncomplicated birth with insurance. What the hell is that policy.
