What Really Breaks A Fast? (Fasting Basics 2) | Jason Fung

What breaks a fast? Does tea, or coffee or cream or sugar break the fast? How about diet soda? Dr Jason Fung discusses what you can take during a fast and how this affects weight loss. These fasting variations can still be very effective for weight loss. Check out my blog at

August 19th 2020, I was at 255 pounds. I saw Dr Fung on you tube. I have been on 18/6 fast ever since. I also eat a keto/carnavor diet. As of today January 24 2021 I weigh 195 pounds. 25 pounds to my goal. Thank you Dr Fung!!

That’s amazing, keep up the good work. I’m hoping to start a fasting regime tomorrow. All these amazing stories really motivate me to give it a try.

    • @whatsupchuck7727 says:

@@scottmcanea you can do it. I chose to eat between the hours of 12 noon and 6pm. That way I am sleeping for alot of the fast and eat when I normally would. Cheeseburgers, bacon and eggs, hotdogs, Barbecue without sauce. Use real butter to cook with or the bacon grease. Stay busy in the morning. Exercise during the fast to increase growth hormones and testosteron. Good luck!!

Dr. Fung, do you think drinking 8ozs of chicken bullion (1 tsp in 8oz of water) would break my fast? I use Knorr chicken bullion. Thank you.

It took me 3 tries over 18 months, but once I stuck to it I lost 75 pounds in 20 weeks. I did 8/16 plan

  • @jenlaird1gmail says:

True. My scale didn’t budge for a full month, but my pants were loose, belly flatter, etc. It drove me crazy! About the 5th week my scale started the incredibly slow downward movement. I’m only down 5 pounds in five weeks, but it is happening. Hang in there, everyone. Sticking with it costs you nothing.

    • @nevermore4971 says:

Hi Jen. I have been looking for good information on the subject of fasting and this Dr knows his stuff. I am going to start my fasting journey this weekend. I have always had an iffy relationship with food. Main problem is I like to too much lol. I wish you lots of success with your weight loss!

    • @jenlaird1gmail says:

@@nevermore4971 I wish you success. Remember to be patient and that you will never lose any weight by giving up. The hard part for me was giving up red wine. It’s worth it, because I feel pretty terific!! Go for it.

    • @creepyspaceinvader1704 says:

Yeah, it’s crazy how you can go several days without food, and the needle doesn’t budge. THEN all of a sudden the weight starts sliding off!!

    • @jonieneese2204 says:

Every time I look at the scale and it’s hardly moved I tell myself I didn’t gain the weight over night so I won’t lose it over night either. I don’t know why that works for me but it keeps me out of the refrigerator.

    • @Rebecca-hv2rb says:

Food , eating can be seen as threatening even a weapon to use against someone. Perhaps your changing your eating habits are bringing up an issue in your husband’s life he is using procrastination to not deal with. Maybe ask him if there is something you can do to support him in that he may want to challenge himself with? Then share your progress together not apart.

This is Sooooooooooooooooo true,,,,,,,,, but it doesn’t only apply to food.. I use to make fun of people that were cheaters on their spouse.. They just happen to accidently both be naked in a bedroom all by themselves, and accidently fall into said bed and……. you get the rest of the accidents that happened….. Its a matter of what is important to you.. Not only physically but morally…. We have become a morally bankrupt nation and I believe it was done on purpose.

I’ve slowly stepped up to a regular daily 16/8 fast, and now I can easily do a 36-hour fast that I have done twice this year so far. My brain just works better. I am more productive. I look forward to getting up in the morning because my sleep is improving. My resting heart rate, BMI, visceral fat, and blood pressure are all headed down. My inflammation and the constant pain in my lower back and legs are gone. My sex life is back after over two years in the toilet. The power of fasting cannot be overstated.

Now I’m doing intermittent fasting and also putting in 24vhour fast and just after a couple days my sugar went down from 9.7 to 6.9 mmol! I am delighted and I finally see the light in the tunnel ! I’m going to stick to this and also Lchf! Thank dr Fung , you explained it so good and as I already was doing intermittent fasting before it was so simple to continue after that I understood the real cause of my problem !
