5 Things This Dermatologist Would NEVER Do! | Dr Sam Bunting

It’s not uncommon for patients to be surprised when I suggest they skip toner or scrubs. Sometimes they feel a little crestfallen when I politely suggest they’d be better off without a particular oil they were quite attached to.

In this video, I share 5 dont's that I stick with consistently.

This is such a good advice and so necessary. I’m a bit tired of all this “influencer” culture were people give and sometimes sell advice when they have no clue of dermatology. In a era of free access to information we live with misinformation and deception. Online gurus can’t substitute a visit to the derm. Is perhaps worth to mention the spritz products to use during the day and cleansers full of actives.

    • @beverlysimple411 says:

I am grateful for knowledgeable derms like Dr. Bunting that post helpful information online. Videos like these are particularly helpful for people like me that live in rural areas where the dermatologists available have refused to update their knowledge since their graduation more than eons ago.

    • @gypseasoul2331 says:

I’m also tired of the “influencer” stage….getting ridiculous

    • @laurahedlund9441 says:

I appreciate reviews of things like cosmetics, where they determine formulations and wear tests however you’re exactly right, especially when it comes to the skin care, I dont even bother. Influencers typically have no “education,” on the matter. I just watched Dr. Dray’s review of Tatcha skin care and it’s a great example of over-hyped skincare that we consumers have no knowledge on and blindly buy. I appreciate the dermatologists that share their opinions on YT. I’ve learned a lot and can take what I find helpful and apply and discard what doesnt suit me.

  • @ekaterinakozlovskaia8082 says:

Dear dr Sam. Thank you so much for your useful videos! I have learned so much from you and my skin has improved enormously since I started following your advice! Especially valuable all the general advice and not just product reviews like you would find with many bloggers on YouTube. By the way you have such a gorgeous hair! Thanks again!

  • @Semapho0ore says:

“Trend driven and not science based” that is an eye opening message.

    • @hummingbee8101 says:

Lol I thought it wasn’t something you needed a word of dermatologist for. Isn’t it common sense?

    • @voorbon4673 says:

      Humming Bee ikr

    • @Southamericangirl42 says:

If it’s on YT it’s trendy.

    • @isabellaschwarz198 says:

      She’s so annoying like hell

    • @muslimahmanfaat1058 says:

Science based is so overrated. Just claimed that it is, and everyone’s just blindly believe it. Profit based is more likey I’d say.

You never know whose genuine and whose not. You’re experience tells more than just any doctor who gives prescription and ‘medicine’ that don’t work or making it even worse, or just temporarily ease the symptoms. More like guessing than science based. A lot of time they wonder of how the patient heal them self. So much for science based. 🙄

  • @AnthonyJP91 says:

Denatured alcohol, fragrance and irritants such as witch hazel, peppermint, menthol, fragrant plant oils & extracts and essential oils.

    • @QueenJaneway says:

I had the worst allergic reaction to peppermint, actually Origins zero oil line. I had bumps all over it was HORRIBLE.

    • @jackdaw99 says:

Natural oils kill my skin — they don’t even have to be fragrant. I hate that ”natural” trend and I’m pretty sure it increases contact allergies/dermatitis. All of a sudden it’s very hard to find products I can actually tolerate.

    • @Fridge756 says:

      What’s wrong with witch hazel?

    • @mbod2gigi says:

      Is Your Refrigerator Running
It is destilled using alcohol which is a skin irritant that causes redness, dryness and deterioration.

    • @Fridge756 says:

Madeleine I have a bottle of Thayers witch hazel alcohol free toner. I’ve been using it for the past 2 months and I haven’t noticed any drying out or adverse reactions.

  • @aoifeoxx2134 says:

I avoid alcohol in products, don’t use foam cleansers, and absolutely avoid like the plague things with lavender in them as it is an ingredient I’m allergic to. I try where possible to have fragrance free products.

  • @kristinkrumenacker8782 says:

Loved this video, Dr. Sam! An idea for another video…tips on what to do for body! Ingrown leg hairs, those unsightly thin purple veins that aren’t raised, body acne…Would love some tips 🙂 Best wishes!!

  • @helgarodrigues8317 says:

I agree with you dra Sam in almost everything. But as I suffer from eczema and have over all very dry skin, face oils save my face in the winter. But again, GOOD QUALITY OILS. I mean fragrance free, essential oils free, and rich in ómegas. Takes time to find one with those characteristics but they are out there.

    • @AudreyNataliaKosmar says:

Helga Rodrigues i have eczema too and love squalane as my facial oil. It has helped my skin barrier!

    • @helgarodrigues8317 says:

@@AudreyNataliaKosmar I’ve used it too, it’s so good and light weight that I tend to use it in the summer . I super recommend it to every skin type. I prefer a mix of oils but when I have to choose my favorite so far is Marula oil.

    • @AnUrbanGypsy says:

I developed a large patch of eczema on my back over winter and my Doc told me olive oil would be fine. 🤷🏻‍♀️. I bought cream from the chemist as I wasn’t sold on the idea!

    • @helgarodrigues8317 says:

@@AnUrbanGypsy You did good. Oil won’t fix an eczema patch, I have to bought specific creams and pomades with corticosteroids to deal with a patch because is the only thing that will work when I’m having a crisis. I use the oil for maintenance, since I’ve been using them it elongates the time between my crisis and keep it more controlled. But I wouldn’t recommend olive oil either, somenthing more like jojoba, sunflower, safflower, marula, squalane, baobab, avocato, moringa or buriti. Just a regular facial oil blend with non irritating proprieties would be fine.

    • @sct4040 says:

      Olive oil, is okay?

  • @drdavinlim says:

Great advice as always Sam, cheers, Davin

    • @honieethesolarpunk4895 says:

Wat about natural bar face soap that foam

    • @drsambunting8178 says:

      Thank-you Davin!

    • @drdavinlim says:

In my recent video…. community of dermatologist helping you guys out… Dr Dray is great value… Dr Sam, … same…but my concentration less, for reasons…

    • @amandagalloway1213 says:

Isabella Schwarz do you really have nothing better to do than to put a bunch of nasty messages on Dr Sam’s YouTube channel? Get a life. Do something productive that builds people up rather than attempting to break people down.

    • @ilbrg says:

Dr Davin Lim suggested physical exfoliation using eg. gauze, coarse grit manicare gloves and Clarisonic in his video “5 SIMPLE SKIN CARE HACKS”.
Dr Sam says no physical exfoliants including products that are gritty or have texture and devices that would equate to physical exfoliation.
Completely opposite advice. So which advice is greater?

  • @fullmetalalchemist4562 says:

    1. Foaming cleansers
    2. No physical exfoliation
    3. Face oils
    4. Spray suncreens
    5. Fragrance

    • @iffattarmim says:

      ❤❤❤🌷🌷

    • @AnUrbanGypsy says:

By listing them as simple bullet points the education is missed for anyone who reads them then pootles off, which is a shame.

    • @QueenJaneway says:

The only thing I do is face oil.. Hm!!

    • @allthings7bypaula24 says:

Arik Leo face and body oils are amazing they can sort out multitude of skin issues, but I would stay clear from mineral oil, that is a petrol derivative that basically does nothing for our skin other then building a layer and can clog pores

    • @personlol3133 says:

All things 7 by paula actually mineral oil is great as it’s been clinically proven not to be pore clogging and is the oil with the least amount of contact allergies and is also the best oil for sensitive skin. You can tell because that’s why it’s used in basically all baby products and also helps repair the skin barrier so go buy some mineral oil oh and btw it’s safe for fungal acne too

  • @lemonmochi8669 says:

not all foam cleansers are bad.. just look into Asian beauty skincare. low ph and gentle ingredients but still foam.

    • @cocodakilla says:

Asians look younger and are way ahead than western derms lol

    • @M00iNenita says:

Ive been using korean foam cleansers already 5 years…. I dont like bar soaps anymore

    • @MissMagic says:

Foaming agents are detergents/surfactants and cannot foam at an an acidic pH. The very best they could be is neutral pH which is still higher than our skin. There are studies comparing with just plain water that show very interesting changes in pH over time in the water only group showing lasting effects from the use of soaps and foaming cleansers on skin pH.

    • @imakefoodhappen says:

A foaming cleanser and a cleanser that is turned into foam or comes out as foam due to a mechanical process in the packaging pump are not the same thing. You can froth milk, that doesn’t mean milk has surfactants.

    • @MissMagic says:

So no hidden surfactants (ones that are less common or are used in lesser amounts so place further down the ingredient list) like say, stearic acid, stearate or cocamidopropyl betaine?
I don’t believe that for a second. There will be a pH buffer in there so your test strips will show you what you want and a surfactant that will kick in as soon as it has chance whether it’s got air pushed through it or is a gel. Look at the ingredients and see what each of them are before you believe claims.

  • @Rhea390 says:

I’ve been using face oils for a really long time now and it has saved my dry skin! I’ve never gotten any bumps and my skin has never gotten dull. I think face oils is really subjective. For me a moisturizer has never worked. It’s never really calmed my skin. Again, my skin has always been extremely dry.

    • @sabrinroble6463 says:

Rhea Vania was your eye area really dry back then and which face oil do you use moisturizer do not work for me too

    • @Rhea390 says:

Sabrin Roble I’ve lately been trying out the body shop oils of life face oil which has been working pretty well for me. It was to hydrate my skin a lot. But I couple this with a body butter I make at home using cocoa butter, olive oil, coconut oil and essential oils like lavender and argan oil. I usually eyeball the proportions.
Mix them together and put it in the fridge for a bit till it gets hard. After you take it oil then whip it. I don’t add any wax into it. The cocoa butter hold it together. You get a lotiony texture.
I use the latter all over my body too cause it really moisturizes the skin! And it doesn’t leave you greasy at all, it absorbs into the skin.
I actually have dry skin all over, even my under eyes. My T-zone is slightly normal depending on the weather. And yes I do drink a lot of water so it’s not a dehydration issue.

    • @youdontknowme3603 says:

Just letting you know, your body shop oil is not hydrating your skin. It is impossible for an oil to be hydrating, only water based products and drinking water can do this. Oils can only nourish the skin. Your body butter mix sounds great though 🙂

    • @caroline-hz8ix says:

Skin oil is good for dry skin in winter

  • @ElianaA says:

You’re my inspiration oh my god 😭 thank you you’re the first person who basically talks about things people need to hear and stop following stupid trends foolishly

  • @huntsman145 says:

Top rated comments: I’m here to get free advice from a professional, but I pick and choose what I believe and here’s MY opinion on what REALLY works

    • @shaunjai4770 says:

She being a dermatologist does not mean we are supposed blindly follow her; just like any other dermatologist, she’s giving us guidelines that reflect HER skincare philosophy. There are other dermatologist who would recommend at least four out of the five items she avoids because that reflects THEIR skincare philosophy.

    • @huntsman145 says:

@Shaun Soule Of course we’re not supposed to blindly follow her. But as a doctor she’s not sharing a ‘philosophy’ but facts that are supported by science and studies. What People are sharing in the comments is ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE. Which is not to mean it’s not true for them personally, but there’s a big difference between the two and the latter is NOT a valid argument against the former. But science based or anecdotal, everyone is free to believe whatever they want.

    • @sellaannisa7371 says:

Yessss and face oil really works on me and changed my life

    2. Physical exfoliation 2:33
    3. Face oils 4:38
    4. Spray-on sunscreens 5:48
    5. Fragrance 8:20

  • @Tailevuductri says:

So respectful to you. But facial oils are truly liquid golds.
I have oily acne prone skin. While Im living in a very hot and humid city, Saigon Vietnam. Facial oils is the step to nourish and moisturize my face without making me breaking out or forming white head pimples like gel/cream does.
My best facial oils for oily, acne skin is la Belle lune organic skin, miracle oil Omorovicza and Sunday riley Luna oil.

    • @annnee6818 says:

I tried the oil thing for months but it would cause breakouts every time even if I just used a droplet. I tried all the oils. It was an awful experience. She’s just speaking for most acne prone people. Not all. Good for you that you’ve found sth. that works for you.

  • @Alice-ei9qq says:

Many oils can be sooo beneficial for the facial skin, such as jojoba and rose hip oil can do miracles especially during climate changes 💕

    • @ho-ry5uf says:

Not as beneficial as serums/ oils packed with benefits from different ingredients. Using retinol/ peptides/ niacinamide / etc is already proven to be much more beneficial than random natural oils which yeah were the best options 100 years ago but not now.

    • @mslaurateague says:

Those 2 are my favorite face oils, with Rosehip being #1! But I have dry skin and don’t get acne. Oils might exacerbate acne in those that suffer from it.

    • @myfragilelilac says:

Question is how good these chemicals are for the body. A lot of synthetic antioxidants can accelerare tumor growth.
