5 Stages of Intermittent Fasting | Jason Fung
Intermittent fasting can be divided into 5 stages, from feeding to post absorptive to gluconeogenesis to ketosis to protein conservation. Each stage is accompanied by different physiologic processes, so understanding the stages allows you to target the benefits. Check out my blog at

Im 52 and A year ago I needed to loose 40+ lbs. I used classic calorie reduction technique. Lost about 20 after 4 months. Felt tired, hungry all the time and no energy and plateaued for 3 months despite reducing calories more. I switched over to 20/4 IF and and within 4 months lost the rest and more. Full of energy, I exercise at the end of y fast and feel the best ever. My weight is now what I was at in high school. Amazing. Just have to be disciplined.
That’s wonderful. What do you eat in a day for the week ? thx
Would you share with us your experience in more detail, please! Thank you and congrats
IF is a calorie reduction technique. It is a bit different style but that is what it is at the end of the day.
@@ukelilly I eat eggs, steel cut oats, Greek yogurt, lots of nuts, avocados. I do not eat bread, only a fruit ever 3rd day except for daily blue berries. I do not drink any of my calories. I enjoy eating dark chocolate, cheese, popcorn and I’ve discovered butter! It’s kinda Keto I eat some healthy grains.
Well done, brother! 👍🏼
72 hr fast and eating ketovore… down 76lbs in 4 months, and zero loose skin. Thank you Dr. Fung, and Dr. Berry!
Way to go!
Rolling 72s?
@@jennh1020 is rolling a certain way of doing a fast? Asking in all honesty!!!
How many times a week are you doing the 72 hours?
@@marivelperez-martinez5894 It depends on you, try once and then experiment, ramp it up slowly. I came down from 325 lbs to 210, I’m 5’9½” and 70 years young. I aim for 175 lbs. I do it about once a week and eat keto in-between fasts.
Now I understand that NO eating will not make a person to be weak BUT no food intake for a certain period of time makes a person to be stronger and healthier!
Yes .How are you doing hope you are having a wonderful day
Thanks for commenting… Your comments are worth viewing hope you’re safe from the pandemics season?
Sorry. I can only fast for 16 hours I get light headed.
@@katemiller7874 , I also experienced that, Ms Kate in my first few days of fasting. What I did was to drink more water . Now, I’m okay.

Watched this to distract myself from the pizza my family was eating during Mother’s Day. I’m happy I didn’t give in and break my fast.
😭I gave in! Darn Me N Eds
🎉🎉🎉 R Jonas
Especially on pizza anything rich like that is going to make you feel ill coming off your fast. Unless your on day one 😂
Good job man. Pizza just mouth pleasure
Pizza during quarantine did me in.
Sept 2020 I read The Diabetes Code and started eating LCHF combined with a 36/12 fasting schedule, as recommended in the book. Within 2 weeks I was off my diabetic meds and now 8 months later I have lost 135 pounds. So many changes have happened since then, this information has been life changing. One of the most surprising was that I had to switch to an old pair of glasses because my eyesight improved.
That’s awesome! Well done, I’m just starting out. I’m doing alternate day fasting, not sure if Jason Fung recommends it though…
What does LCHF mean? Please indicate what the acronym means. Thank you.
@@The_Red_Pill__ – LCHF means “low carb, high fat” – essentially, Keto (but, there are so many ‘variations’ on it)…guess you kind of have to experiment with yourself and see what works for you😊 Best of luck on your journey!💕😁
@@Skelly777able – Dr Fung discusses ADF in his books, “The Obesity Code” and “The Complete Guide to Fasting”, as a viable fasting schedule (IIRC), so you should be fine with it, depending on your overall goals. Both books are wonderful, and *highly recommended* ! I have insulin issues😬🤪, so ADF is my preferred approach, fwiw, after an extended (>72 hrs) fast…hang in there, and DON’T GIVE UP! Even if you have a few “mis-fires” and have to stop/start a few times, just get back to it and keep going – you’ll get there, eventually!💕 I’m saying that as much for myself as for you, I suppose😢😊…it’s ‘easy’ to fall back into old patterns when something you’re trying doesn’t appear to be working. I’m sure you know what I mean – we’re all a constant work in progress! I find that what I do one week usually manifests itself the following week, so if I can just remind myself of that, it usually helps me push through the rough patches…cheers!🙏🏼❤️
@@joeygirl314 Good to know, thank you! We are indeed works in progress, I am getting past my food issues with daily prayer to God, which has been the best thing I’ve ever done. May this journey make us all more peaceful and powerful! 🌻
To add to my last comment I’m a 57 year old man 5′ 10 1/2″ who started intermittent fasting on August 27, 2020 weight of 310lbs. I have lost 113lbs so far intermittent fasting. I was a heavy smoker and drinker (Beer and whiskey). I ate fast food daily. Was on many psychological medications. My BP was 200/106. I used a CPAP machine for many years. Today May 15, 2021 my weight is 197lbs I no longer smoke or drink. Or take any prescription drugs! Zero!!! My BP is 117/74. And I no longer need my CPAP machine. And my blood panels are perfect. I still would like to lose 20-30 more pounds and stay at that weight for the rest of my life. All in all it’s been a very exciting and long 8 and a half months. But I have learned so much about fasting and my health. And became a much healthier and happier person. I’ve gone from size 44 pants to size 32. And from 4X shirts to large (medium soon).
Wow Kelly. That is truely inspiring. Congratulations. I just started this week and so far so good. Thanks for sharing your journey and inspiring others.
Your weight is good enough for your height
Holly, unbelievable, congratulations!
What a great success story , I’m just beginning
Would like to lose about 15 lbs , off cigarettes about 6 weeks, not a easy battle, but with Gods help, a successful one

Why this man is not awarded the Nobel..For saving humanity.
another japanese scientist proved autophagy and won in 2019 I think. I hope Dr Fung wins too! He is an angel
He never replies, but this guys is good!
Good question, Nobel award has certain criteria s. when people meet those are awarded.
Why? Because the big pharmaceutical companies want to push more pills, ‘treatments‘ and vaccines. If people are too healthy, then they just have to invent a Plandemic.
Because the Nobel prize is so political now. Otherwise how would Al Gore get it for a stupid film. That’s not a discovery.
I just did 36 hours and going strong! Stretching for 48!!!
Good for you! Good luck. I’m at 48 hours and feeling fine. I’ll go as long as I can feel good. Once I get into day 3 and beyond I usually feel amazing!

Day 7 water fast. Lost 10 pounds pure fat and 2.8 water. Going for 30 days. Thank you Dr Fung for educating the world on fasting. I’m saving my own life for free!
Congrats on improving your health and hope you’ve kept the weight off.
I just have my doubts on the breakdown of those numbers. I’m not an expert, nor have I fasted for that long. From the data I’ve seen, typically the ratio of fat to water weight lost should be reversed, 2lbs : 10lbs.
How much did you weigh when you started, if you don’t mind my asking? I just started what I expect to be a 3 day fast but if I feel okay , I may extend it. Did you add salt?
30 days on water only? Am I reading this correctly?
Free? Technically, you’re saving money since you’re buying FAR less groceries 😉
First 10 lbs is water weight, is what I’ve always been told.

Can you help me understand impact of insulin resistance/ PCOS and fasting?

@@monicasaenz141 yes, he is a Nephrologist (Kidney/Renal specialist).
Hi, been a fan for years. I have a very good question for you. I’m eating those miracles noodles made from glucomannan omad. It’s been 6 days & I’m in large ketosis. I’m not spiking insulin so my question is. If I’m only having this & staying in full ketosis, am I missing other components of a regular fast? Or is this close to the same? I couldn’t find much info on this & thought you would know.
I have lost 30 lbs this month doing a 8/16 intermittent fasting routine. I also stopped drinking soda. I went to the doctor to get my yearly blood work done and he told me that the only way I could have list 30 lbs is if I had malnutrition or had a serious illness. He obviously doesn’t understand thevpower of intermittent fasting and dropping your carb intake in half. I was 344 lds last month and now I’m 314 lbs. I feel great. I have more energy. My stomach has shrunk by 4 inches. I feel 10 years younger. I only eat dinner once a week with my wife. I have embraced that feeling of hunger before bed and that large meal for breakfast.
I’m an Uber driver and I was 3.5 days into a fast when my passangers wanted to stop at In N Out. They offered to buy my a burger. I was so tempted to take the free food, break my fast, get a protein style burger and keep it keto. I had every reason to justify doing it. But I resisted. They ate the food in my car too. It smelled so good
Proud of you!
Awesome 💪
Way to go brother.
Good job man I am proud of you😁
Remember: Whatever your goal, Life tests your discipline😉Good on ya!
I normally skip ads because watching them is a waste of time … But in support of Dr. Jason Fung and his videos … I am not skipping their ads anymore … 😊
I’m watching this into a 48hour fast. Started at 211 in august and now I’m 155! Its so interesting to me and I’ve became hooked.
Are you eating carbs? Are you at a calorie deficit?
What do you do on workdays? Do you only fast on weekends?
I personally change nothing to my routine, workdays I work. And also go on my daily 1.5 hours walk or 1 hour cycling ( I pick one or the other according to my mood). I fast for 5 days at a time usually ( water/ lemon only). My routine otherwise remains the same.
Got to say it took me many attempts in order to not feel fatigue or headaches. But now, it feels pretty easy.
For those wondering i got down to 130 and looked sick so now I’m bulking and in the gym slowly becoming a monster 🤣💪🏻
@@Boostisablast haha cool you go Hulk!
Started last week I am a food alcoholic….got rid of the stress, paid my bills did my taxes, organized everything in my life…including people who hurt me, now it’s time to get healthy… it was hard to stop eating? But I pushed through it…I do 18 hour fast my eating window is 11 am to 3 pm shut off..meals have protein, vegetable, fruits, water…..tea coffee and fizzy water….I also cleaned my diet for 3 month before I fasted..no junk no pop, no flour…upgraded to olive oils, living foods
That’s wonderful. Well done and keep going. Wishing you a long healthy future.
Wouldn’t that be a 20 hour fast?
Three months check-in. How are you doing?
Very clear explanation
I started something similar about 2 months ago. Lost about 12 kgs (25 pounds). I feel soooo much better!
I love the fact that if we are overweight, well… just stop eating for a few days. And then eat again. WHAT A CONCEPT!!!
Funny thing is this is common sense 😂
Common sense isn’t so common 🤣 It’s the “Diet” industry that are to blame mixed messages, indoctrination blah blah blah if we think about it naturally lean people never diet, they eat when they’re hungry some days a lot some days a little as overweight people we copy what overweight people do go on some unsustainable diet or meal plan it’s bonkers 🤪
And your stomach shrinks so you eat less and feel full faster. And you flush out bad stuff and soon your body feels healthier and you feel happier. Your grocery bill goes down, you take more interest in your appearance and are less self-conscience and more outgoing. You feel like you are a part of some bigger plan and you start telling other people about the positives of intermittent fasting. And you have more compassion for others struggling with their weight and health and want to expose Big Food Companies and Big Pharma for their lies that keeps us feeling unhealthy and addicted to the crappy and expensive products they promote. They get richer and we get poorer and sicker😢…
Oh my gosh let me tell you day three of a water fast is like the movie limitless. I can remember phone numbers from 25 years ago. Colors are brighter. I can smell everything I can see better and I can recall anything. It is incredible.
👍 Great stuff
Same for me. Only downside seems to be if there’s anyone near me I talk at hyper speed on any topic. Weirds ppl out. So now I consciously try to lean out of conversations and listen more just to keep things calm.
